Curriculum Rationale

Learning languages offers manifold benefits. It is not only a catalyst for social mobility, but it also enhances cognitive abilities like memory and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in languages can boost future career prospects, as bilingual individuals are highly sought after in many industries.

Additionally, learning a new language fosters cultural awareness and appreciation, enriching students' global perspectives. Lastly, studying languages can improve understanding of English grammar, as it encourages comparative linguistic analysis.

KS3 (Years 7-9) - Spanish

Year 7 Topics

Introductions, personal information, describing personality, family and pets, free time activities, talking about the weather, school, describing physical appearance, describing a good friend, my home, summer plans

Year 8 Topics

Holidays, social media and technology, music and cinema, food, eating out at a Spanish restaurant, places in town, organising an outing, finding our way around town.

Year 9 Topics

Talking about likes and dislikes, describing a past celebration and discussing future plans, jobs and careers, discussing what a healthy lifestyle looks like, learning about human rights for children in the Spanish speaking world.

Assessment

The GCSE Edexcel Spanish course assesses four core skills through written and oral exams:

1. Listening (Paper 1)

  • Format: Written exam with recordings of spoken Spanish.

  • Duration: 35 minutes (Foundation Tier) or 45 minutes (Higher Tier).
  • Weighting: 25% of total grade.
  • Content: Questions on main ideas, details, and opinions in a variety of contexts.

2. Speaking (Paper 2)

  • Format: Oral exam conducted by the teacher.

  • Duration: 7-9 minutes (Foundation Tier) or 10-12 minutes (Higher Tier).
  • Weighting: 25% of total grade.
  • Content: Role play, photo card discussion, and general conversation.

3. Reading (Paper 3)

  • Format: Written exam with comprehension questions and a short translation into English.

  • Duration: 45 minutes (Foundation Tier) or 1 hour (Higher Tier).
  • Weighting: 25% of total grade.
  • Content: Extracts from different text types, including advertisements, emails, and literary works.

4. Writing (Paper 4)

  • Format: Written exam with tasks such as structured writing, open-ended responses, and translation into Spanish.
  • Duration: 1 hour (Foundation Tier) or 1 hour 15 minutes (Higher Tier).
  • Weighting: 25% of total grade.
  • Content: Writing tasks vary by tier, from short messages to extended essays.

  • Weighting: 25% of the total qualification.

  • Content: Tests understanding of written Arabic through various text types, including advertisements, emails, letters, articles, and literary texts.

4. Writing in Arabic (Paper 4)

  • Format: Written examination.

  • Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes (Foundation Tier) or 1 hour 25 minutes (Higher Tier).

  • Weighting: 25% of the total qualification.

  • Content: Assesses the ability to produce written Arabic for different purposes and audiences, including tasks such as writing messages, letters, and essays.
